Frequently Asked Birth Photography Questions

  • Yes! I’ve attended births in the hospital with OBs, midwives, cesareans, births in birth centers and in homes. No matter what your preference, birth plan, or where birth takes you, I’ll be there for you.

  • Because YOU are my priority, I have a limited number of births I attend per month. Some clients book me as soon as they find out they are pregnant because they want to make sure I’m the one at their birth (I feel so honored and kind of freaked out when I get to be one of the first to hear the news). Other clients don’t decide they want birth photography until weeks before their due date; if I’m available, I add them to my calendar. Since you’re looking at this page, I can assume you are considering birth photography, so let’s connect today and find out if I’m a good fit for your birth.

  • As long as needed! When we connect about your birth, we’ll go over what’s important to you and I’ll make sure to capture as many of those moments as possible during and after your birth.

I typically stay 2 hours postpartum to photograph the newborn exam, first latch (if breastfeeding), skin to skin and meeting the family.

Before I go, I always check in with my clients to ensure we’ve captured everything possible. You are my #1 priority.

  • Not to worry, mama, I’ve got you covered with multiple back up plans and a whole village supporting me to make sure I can be at your birth.

When I’m on call I sleep with my phone volume on loud, have my bag packed and am ready to be at your birth at the drop of a hat.

This is not a side career for me, or something I’m doing in addition to my typical sessions; birth photography is my main job and priority! If I have any other type of session booked, they know they will be rescheduled if I’m called to a birth.

While I work to be prepared for anything, life is unpredictable sometimes. I have a handful of seasoned, trusted, amazing birth photographers backing me up. If a backup attends your birth, they will treat you with the same professional courtesy as I would, they will have all of my notes, and be ready to take my place. The coolest part? They give me all of the images so I can be the one to edit them. So even if I don’t attend your birth, which is HIGHLY unlikely, the photos you get will reflect my style and editing and be delivered to you as if I had taken the photos myself.

  • The short answer is quality and quantity! A lot of thought and effort goes into how I price my sessions. With birth, I am there for you when you want me to be, giving my undivided attention with no limit on time or the amount of photos I take.

Due to my approach to birth photography, I often end up editing 5-10 times the amount of photos I would take during a “traditional” session. My flat rate makes it so I can be 100% present, not counting images or watching the clock.

Most importantly, you can rest easy knowing I do not charge extra for false starts, middle of the night or holidays.

  • On average, I take somewhere between 500-800 images, based on length of labor and what you want me to photograph, but I usually select about half to edit since I many of the images are almost exact duplicates.

When I deliver your gallery, there is no limit to how many digital images I provide. My average is around 300 images per birth. If you want a more curated collection, or the maximum amount possible, we will put that down in your photography plan and make it happen.

  • Depends on what do you want! My clients range from “I want to see everything that is happening, the more detail the better” to “I want you to stay north of the border”. This is YOUR birth; you are in charge of what photos I take and where I stand during your birth.

For someone who wants photos of every detail, including the birth of the placenta, I typically move around a lot as quietly and quickly as I can so that every angle is captured, and your photos represent your birth as best as possible.

For someone who wants to capture the emotion, power, and atmosphere of your birth, but not the more personal/physical sides of it, I’m happy to photograph over your shoulder so we still get to see baby be born but from a more conservative perspective.

We will go cover this when we make your birth plan. Contact me to get let me know what you’re envisioning.

  • A non-refundable retainer is due at booking to hold your spot. After that, it’s your call! Some clients prefer to pay all up front, others opt for my payment plan. If you choose a payment plan, we can divide your total into 2 or 3 payments over three months. All fees need to be paid by 36 weeks.

  • I get this question enough to know it’s on most of my client’s minds. Girl, I got you! I won’t deliver a photo of you that I wouldn’t want of myself. I have a skilled, artistic approach to editing using the top software available. My goal is to ensure your best, most recognizable self is delivered in the final images.

When I take your photo, I choose angles and utilize available lighting, so you look your best and my editing can be minimal. If you do end up with an image that’s not your favorite, I will work with you to make the changes (within reason) that you would like.
